God, it's been so long since I posted anything! I could make poor excuses and say that it was because I hurt my wrist the other week, or that I've been addicted to Skyrim since it came out. (Both of which are true.) Anyway, here's a panel from a little four page comic I'm doing. I've just finished inking up the first two pages and I'm hoping I can blitz the final two then get it on the net.

The first week was Zelda. I based my image on "Links awakening for the game-boy", because it was the first Zelda I ever played. I'd like to be cool and say "A link to the past was my first", but I can't lie.

This image comes from a little sketch I did the other day. I well like drawing naked, three eyed orcs willies. I'm not sure why I gave the Ogre a cloth. I think it's because if I had to draw a bigger Orge reproductive gun, I'd feel a bit weird about it.

So, here's my "finished" image for the music wall project. As I mentioned in the previous post, the dimensions were given to us the wrong way round so many of us had to re-jig things in order for it to work. (It was no-one's fault, just a misunderstanding.) I jigged mine around last night but got it wrong again, somehow...
I'm good like that.

I had to put my name and contact malarky on there somewhere but I didn't have space at the bottom, so I decided to put them down the sides instead. Not ideal, but I don't think I'd have finished in time if I had to redraw things again-again. It looks okay right? I think so, a bit.

I'm really excited about this! It's going to be great to see some awesome art from the participants of this mini project chilling out in the open for all to see.
I can't wait to see what everyone else has come up with.

This image is a doozie! It took ages today to colour it because it's actually about 3 meters tall/wide! It's for some art/wall thing that is supposed to promote street preforming or busking. I figured I'd post it now because there was a slight hiccup with the sizing.

We were given the measurements for our images, but they never told us which was height and which was width. Mine was supposed to be 2305 x 2690, so I like many of the other people taking part went with width then height, which to be honest I thought everyone in the world did. Apparently not though! So I think everyone's images are too tall. Such a pain.

I'm going to add a bit more to each side of the image then paste it all together. No big deal, just a bit of a stress.

I can't wait to see this thing up on a wall in all it's majestic glory. Super excited.
Also, I think this drawing might be the best thing I've done for a while. Cool.

I'm starting to doubt whether I want this thing to be huge and seen by loads of people. Perhaps if I sleep on it and come back to it with fresh, sparkling eyes tomorrow, I'll be more into it. Here's an unused panel from a comic I'm working on!

It's about a lonely little kid that goes to the library after school to read books and what not. He finds a creepy book in the "forbidden section" of the library and it sucks him into a new dimension! It's very early days, but I hope I can finish this one. The Space comic I was doing fizzled out, which was a massive shame. It just wasn't compelling enough. Hopefully this one will be. It'll be better than the deperssing Jeffrey Brown comic I was planning by a long shot. Failed relationships comics can be far too sappy.

I think I might colour this one up and use it as a promo image or something, so watch this space.

Well this went in a totally different direction than I thought it would! I was knocking out key lines here and there and this is what happened. I'm not dead into all this texture painting stuff on photoshop just because I don't think I can really do it. Not to the standard that some people can, anyway.
I still like this image though. Just look at the mini Gas Giants face! D'awww! He's having the best time. Poor Cosmonaut kid though, he'll be toast if he touches him.

I was doodling today and ended up with this. It's unfinished at the moment because I just can't get the colours right. I hate space sometimes when I have to colour it, It drives me crazy. So I'm giving up for today and hopefully I'll be able to sort it out tomorrow. There are bits that need sorting but I'm totally into the goofy "gas giant," His face is so silly.

Man I'm stupid. I was supposed to send these off by post for that Waterstones competition, but I didn't realise that until today. Total failure. Yeah, I had a month to do it in and I could make excuses about how down I've been lately, which actually has effected my work ethic a lot. I've literally spent a month sitting around being sad and appyling for awful jobs. It's been rough.
I think I'm getting happier now though, maybe. Doing this really cheered me up and I was totally psyched about sending these off for the competition, but I've screwed it up. Really mad at myself.

I didn't know what to draw last night and I found this old sketch of a 12th Century Knight all cut up and stuff in a sketchbook. I couldn't be bothered to ink it, so I just scanned in the pencil and ended up with this. I'm pretty into it. Mixing up pencils and photoshop is easy on the eyes, it's quite nice having a bit of texture in the line work. Also I love Kettle Helms, they look so badass yet cute at the same time. I believe they used them from the 12th Century up until the 15th Century, so when I said he's a 12th Century Knight I should be historically correct.

Also, the new Death Cab Album is streaming on NPR. It's dope.

I read something about Muhammad Ali shadow boxing and wham! here it is. I'm pretty into it. I really need a new pallete though, this is more or less the same one as the NHS booklet. I haven't been able to get very inspired lately, which is a bummer. You can see that in the fact that I've ripped off my own image and put a vampire in it. Gothic.
I've been listening to Calabrese again since I recently found out about their new album (a year late!) and it inspired me to draw this thing. I think I'm getting better with colours now. It took me ages to figure out the palette for this, but it was worth it baby.

I only hope I can get out of this creative funk pretty soon.

Greetings from hyperspace nerds! here's a rough-ish first 8 pages of a comic that I'm working on. It's about a guy who's stuck on an uninhabited world with no hope of rescue and his coming to terms with his untimely end... Dark. That's the plan anyway, I think it might work out.

I drafted this up in an A5 notepad so the panels are a big thick and splodgy. I'll probably re-draw all of this at roughly double size, so that when I re-size the panels they'll tighten up. I just hope it reads okay... Maybe a little bit too fast? but if I'm going to make it say 24 pages or something, it needs to be pretty quick, at least at the start to kick things off before it gets weird!

Anyway, live long and prosper nerds.

Okay! Here are some recent images for a board game about consumerism!
I agreed to help a student doing her Masters Degree out by drawing bits and bobs for the game, including the backs of different play cards, board tiles and squares and other stuff. I really enjoyed drawing some of this stuff, weirdly I even enjoyed drawing the buildings. I usually despise drawing buildings, but the ones I did for this project actually look pretty good! I've only posted a few things here, just so I don't ruin the project. I hope it looks great when the board is printed!

Man, this is the worst thing I've drawn for ages. I don't even know what happened. It started off okay, but after the inks it just went to pot.
Anyway, this image is from a dream I had last night, in which I was alone in my nan's house and this weird figure was tapping at the windows asking me to let him in. There was a note on the table that read, "Don't let him in!" surrounded by loads of pencil shavings and crumpled notes. It was well strange. Which ever room I went in to, the figure would appear and start tapping on the windows. I don't know what the dream means, but it was horrible.

Hey there, here's something new.

I was talking with James Loram a couple of days ago about editorial work, and I realised that I've only ever done about two mock editorials in the past four years! Which is dreadful.

So I thought I should probably have a go at a few. This one was for an article in New Scientist which was about a japanese space agency (Sounds cool already right?) that are planning to use a robotic grabber-claw from the international space station to clean derelict rocket and satelite debris that is circling the earth.

I'm not sure whether or not I'm into this image. I think it's the colour I've used for space, but I'm planning to redo the image using inks rather than just going for it in photoshop. Hopefully I can then put them side by side and see which metod yields the best results.

Here's an image that I'm going to use for promotional purposes! (That's why the bottom bit is empty.) I'm well into this image. I actually still like it now. Usually when I finish something I'll hate it after about half an hour, but this one! this one's a keeper (For now.)

I took the palette from an image I did about a year and a half ago, which I didn't really like bar the colours. So this is a redemption peice for that palette, because now they're in something that is half decent. I actually did a good job inking something for once too, so it looks nice and clean.

I'll post up the finished promo peice after I complete the next part of my plan!

Another Fallout inspired image here. Remember the Tunnel Snakes from Fallout 3? Well, I was playing Fallout whilst my cat Tom was sitting with me and it clicked in my head that he'd look totally boss (50's slang there...) as a Tunnel Snake, so here we are...

I've taken a totally different approach with this image. I started with a sketch, then used shapes and the pen tool in Photoshop to colour it. It took a while because I'm not used to working in this way, but I think it looks pretty cool! I'll totally do some more work this way in the future as it was so nice not to worry about key line colour. (Something which I find can make or ruin my drawings!)

Yeah, so what I've only just got Fallout New Vegas? Who cares? Certainly not me. I'm quite glad I only paid £13 for it on amazon rather than £45 when it first came out. It's a very good game, but it feels a bit "been there, done that" but I love it anyway!
I've been in a real slump lately. Every time I put pencil to paper, it sucked. Thankfully I had a great birthday weekend and got to see my lovely girlfriend for five days! which seems to have given me my pencil powers back... YEAH!

Anyway, I've been playing Fallout NV on Hardcore mode since I got it last thursday and it's been brilliant! I'm not sure if I could play it and be as captivated if they hadn't included hardcore mode. It makes the missions and gameplay so much better, as I actually have to think before I do things now. No more running around mashing the Right trigger!

My character in game has gone down the science route, hence the energy weapon in the image. I think I would have been better off drawing a regular gun because that green is so garish, but that's how it looks in game. Whatever.

Now! Back to the wastelands...

I have no idea what I was doing with the framing of this drawing. At the time I thought it looked cool... Something about a fractured future in relation to the games' story maybe?
Anyway, it's just a little drawing of my Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series. Mass Effect 2 was easily the best game of the year for me. (I really enjoyed Minecraft as well, so that was up there.)

I keep forgetting to post on this blog because I've only been posting things I've been doing over at the Bridge blog! Stupid.

Anyway, here's the first three pages of the booklet about diabetes that I'm working on with Steve and Dan. They're only prototype pages, but I'd say they're pretty much final other than some colour changes. I enjoy them.

Here's a little link that'll take you to the Bridge's website, where I've just posted my third amended version of the Diabetes Booklet I've been working on for the NHS.

I had a meeting on wednesday with Jo Davies, Steven Bond, Dan Jones and Clare Griffith (who works for the NHS) and we talked through all of the work that Jo, Wendy and myself have been doing. Clare mentioned that she would be able to show the other consultants on the project the rough booklets at a meeting she was having on tuesday.

However, there were some big amendments that needed to be made to avoide confusion, as we had discussed what the changes would be and were clear on it, but anyone who wasn't there would be left in the dark. It was decided that I should try and make some of these changes and send them to Clare before tuesday, which, if I'm honest was a lot to do. (almost half of the booklet needed re-drawing!)
Somehow I managed it and I'm very happy with the booklet so far and I'm itching to get started on the artwork!

I had a lot of fun drawing this image. It's inspired partly by Lord of the rings and partly by the Dungeons and Dragons arcade game; Shadows over Mystara, which is one of my favourite side scrolling beat em' ups. Totally worth playing.
In the game you'll enter levels to screaming villagers and rampaging Orcs! I guess it isn't uncommon to see that in a lot of games though, I'm sure it happens in the Golden Axe's.

Also, the first stages of the NHS project should be wrapping up soon! Which is exciting as I'll get to do some actual full colour work. Yes!

Double post! This post is basically the same as the last one, except it's about H.P Lovecraft.

I recently bought "The Necronomicon," which is a compendium of almost all of Lovecraft's published work and it's amazing. Yeah, some of the stories can be quite hard to read because of the language used and a lot of the stories read basically like diary entries but they are so good! I just love how bleak and hopeless his stories are. Not many of his characters live to be in another story. The dream-like world he writes about are terrifying, simply because they're described so well! But then again, I can see why no-one can make a great film adaptation of his stories (except the re-animator), because they're just so bat-shit!

So yeah, I drew this up a lot quicker than the Serling one, I don't think it's as good but I thought I'd post it anyway!

I love The Twlight Zone! Rod Serling was the man and the stories on the series were so innovative, simple and original. When I was younger they used to scare me to death! I think the first Zone episode I ever saw was "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" with William Shatner. It was so subtle and horrifying, so much more thoughtful than the gore-fests we get today. (Not that I don't like today's horror films!)

Anyway, I was watching some episodes from series one and I felt like paying tribute to Rod and his amazing series.

For a while now I've been playing a variety of "Dungeon Crawlers," or rogue-like games during my free time. Most recently I've been on a terrible journey to obtain the "Orb of Zot" from the lowest regions of the earth, frequently failing and dying horrible deaths at the hands/claws/teeth etc of the dungeons many inhabitants.
Usually when you play a game like "Dungeon Crawl," "Nethack" or even "Doom-rl" the graphics are in ASCII, but the one I'm currently playing, "Linley's Dungeon Crawl" features tileset graphics, which makes it a lot easier to decipher enemies and items.

As I've been playing this game a lot, it has naturally inspired me to draw something. So I made a picture of my current "Hero," Errol, Human rogue. He's not dead yet, but probably will be soon...

Here's a colour draft for my "Eight steps to achieving diabetes control! Some of the colours need re-working; The grass is a little bit too sickly yellow at the moment, and I want to show a more healthy atmosphere, rather than an ill one. It's for a diabetes booklet after all!
But other than that, I think it's pretty good anyhow, even though I didn't put shadows under any of the characters. I left them out because they seemed to overcrowd the picture, but maybe they do need to go in to add some grounding? mmm...

Here are some new Illustrations that are going to be used (or so they tell me!) on the University of Plymouth website, in a guide for prospective students about how to approach the interview process.

There's six Illustrations in all, but the captions for these ones are...
"Ask your tutor for their opinion on your portfolio."
"Avoid stress."
"Take photographs of large work."

I haven't coloured anything for ages since finishing Uni, but I think I'm starting to win the battle against colour! I'm really happy with these. However since I've had a bit of a break from colouring, staring at a computer screen all days has given me a major headache! I need to build up my tolerance again.

Because I've been working on a project for the NHS and I've been posting images on another blog! That's why!

So far the project is going really well. I'm getting to have loads of fun drawing children's activities and games, whilst laying down some cold, hard facts.
Being my first real illustration job, the finance side is turning out to be a nightmare and getting paid is a taxing process.

Still, I'm really grateful to have been given this opportunity.

Here's the first colour draft of my Polyptych Native American comic.
It's supposed to chronicle the boys journey into adulthood. I think it works okay, but I'm unsure about the colours at the moment. Mainly the grass.

I plan to make an piece that accompanies this one with Illustrated descriptions that details what is happening in each panel.

That should make things clearer!

Mock editorial piece for a ScienceNow article entitled, The best way to change a species? Start eating it.

The basis of the editorial is that cod are evolving into a smaller species in order to evade fishing nets.

An experimental thing based on Rob Hodgson.
It's loads of pencil layers on top of each other. So basically I block in loads of shapes then change the colours. Something like that.
